Skipp Surfboards
Skipp surfboards are known for their quality of workmanship and performance. Skippy as he affectionately known, has spent his entire lifetime, well since 1963, supplying mainly the Wollongong and south coast of NSW with the best boards possible. Skippy is not only a great board builder, he is an easy going and friendly bloke. As a testament to the quality of boards he built, the stable of shapers, glassers, even his artist’s have been the best he could find, including Phil Byrne, Ed Sinnott, Richard Palmer, Terry Richardson, Frank Latta and Kevin Parkinson. Chad Ryan, Ben Hearn, Phil Pepper and ‘The Master’ Yasu Nagami. Most of these guys have gone on to make their own mark in the industry and have opened their own brands. I think it’s fair to say there is not one of them that hasn’t followed the quality craftsmanship they learned at Skipp’s. Some of these guys started shaping at Skipp’s and John spent a lot of time teaching many others the craft. The essence of a true master, is to hand down his craft to keep the industry and quality to higher and higher standards. I think this sums up John Skipp. When you scroll through the following images of his boards, you will see so many of these boards in near new condition, 30 years on. This is the quality of Skipp boards. Skippy was always a front line surfer and has pioneered some of the best surf spots on the south coast. If you ever meet Skippy, allow yourself and fair bit of time as he has a million stories of the early days and you had better believe them as Skippy is a large part of our surfing history especially the south coast. Skippy you are a legend.
