One of the most valuable contributions for surfing was, along with Peter Troy to be one of the founders of the Bells contest at Bells beach Victoria.
I don’t think they realised what a history making day it was. The Bells contest celebrated it’s 50th year this year 2012.

Vic Tantau
Bells Beach is named after the family that took up the first pastoral run hereabouts in the 1840s. It is claimed the surfing potential of the site was first recognised in 1949 by Vic Tantau, Peter Troy and Owen Yateman.
When Vic Tantau ran Bells Beach’s first surfing competition, he had no idea it would grow into a internationally famous event.
