John Blanch
John Blanch was a master shaper, an exceptional surfer, and — in his younger days — a bit of a rebel. He was a few years older than me, and when I first met him, I would’ve been about 13 or 14. At the time, he was one of the top surfers in Cronulla.
I can’t even remember exactly how we met — it was probably out in the water. I was just a grom learning the ropes, and John took the time to give me a few pointers. That kind of encouragement sticks with you. It meant a lot.
John was heavily involved in several boardriders clubs and is credited with starting the Cronulla High Board Club. After moving north to Coffs Harbour, he helped establish the Coffs Area Boardriders Club. Wherever he was, he was held in high regard — not just as a surfer, but as a gifted shaper.
He crafted his own boards and, like many of us in those days, shaped for other brands as well, including the highly respected Cooper Surfboards and San Juan in Byron Bay.
A mutual friend, Keith “Tiki” Neville, once told me John was a great mate, and that they surfed Broken Head together many times — just another example of the deep connections John built through surfing.
John wasn’t just a talented surfer and shaper — he was someone who gave back, shared his knowledge, and left a lasting mark on the communities he was part of. For those of us who crossed paths with him, especially as young groms finding our way, he made a difference.
I am not sure of the credits for the photos but they were all sent by Joshua Blanch John’s son, so if they are yours please advise me and I will add them.
