Barry “Magoo” McGuigan

Barry “Magoo” McGuigan was a pioneer of surfing and the nicest man I ever met, a gentleman of the old school, with a bit of larrikin mixed in. A competitive surfer to the end. Magoo surfed in competitions until I think he was 77 years old. Hailing from Bondi Beach in Sydney’s eastern suburbs Magoo surfed everywhere and was amongst some of the elite of surfing for many years. He married Debbie and later moved to the Central Coast and each year there is the Magoo Classic malibu competition on Barry’s honor.

Magoo’s wife Debbie was Barry’s love of his life and I think Debbie would say the same. Every time I spoke to Magoo about his life he would mention Debbie as one of the main reasons for his happiness. The photo’s below are from Debbie to show their collection from over the years. I have never met anyone with a bad word to say about Magoo, and if we could all live our lives with the same standards the world would be a better place. I could write for a lifetime and still not complete Magoo’s story, but hopefully, you get the short story of a great man!!!!!!

I have asked Debbie to write a short story for this page and I hope to have it online ASAP.
